Police verification is mandatory for landlords in most Indian cities. The online process now takes days, not weeks — if you file the right set.

Tenant Police Verification: Documents and Timeline

Failing to file tenant verification can attract a penalty under Section 223 of the BNS in cities where the police commissioner has issued a standing order. It is the landlord's obligation, not the tenant's.

What you need

  • Signed tenant verification form with photographs.
  • Aadhaar or passport copies for every adult occupant.
  • A copy of the executed rent agreement.
  • Landlord's ownership proof and contact details.

Filing online

Most state police portals accept a digital submission with scanned annexures. Acknowledgement usually arrives within 48 hours and clearance within 7–15 days. Keep the acknowledgement number with your agreement file.
