The First-Time Renter's Checklist Before You Sign

Signing is the easy part. These checks happen before the pen touches paper.

Verify the property and the person

• Match the owner's name on the index II or tax receipt with their ID.
• Ask for the society NOC where tenancy approval is required.
• Confirm parking allotment in writing, not verbally.

Record the physical condition

• Electricity and water meter readings on handover day.
• Photos of walls, flooring, bathroom fittings and appliances.
• A written list of what stays furnished and what does not.

Attach all of it as an annexure. Ten minutes of documentation protects an entire deposit.
